Willoq Community in Peru
Working with our ground operator in Peru, Lima Tours, Travcoa was the first operator to embrace sustainable development and making it a part of every Escorted Journey that goes to Peru. Since then, other tour operators have followed suit, encouraging and enabling them to start a foundation.
We currently contribute to the Willoq community in the Sacred Valley near Machu Picchu, donating $25 per person that travels to Peru with us. To date, we’ve had 76 guests travel to Peru, making it a grand total of $1,900 in contributions. In 2014, we plan to continue these efforts in helping the Willoq community and be an active part in the development of a society in Peru.
Our hotel partner in Peru is also playing a huge role in helping the Willoq community. The Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge has a program designed to help local people help themselves. To support some of the poorest local communities in the area, the hotel has established an agricultural school on its own land. It runs a four-week program for local people who learn to grow and produce organic tomatoes, salads and herbs. The hotel provides them with seeds to use on their own land and then buys their produce, both to provide a valuable source of income and to reduce its carbon footprint by avoiding the need to import from other parts of the country.
