2010 Completed Initiatives:
DIF Project in Cancun, Mexico
January 25th – 28th, 2010
Travcoa (along with sister company, YMT Vacations) sent a representative to Cancun to participate in the Specialist Sector's annual sustainable development conference aimed to help inspire each company to develop new and exciting goals in responsible travel initiatives. While a portion of the time spent in Cancun was focused in seminars and meetings regarding Sustainable Travel initiatives, some special time was set aside to make an impact while in Cancun. One sister company attending the conference, Student City, has made a huge impact in Cancun with their philanthropic work with the DIF Project, a non-profit organization that provides a safe-haven for abused, abandoned, and disabled children. Company representatives who gathered in Cancun went shopping for much-needed supplies for the children in DIF's care, paying a visit to DIF with the wonderful donations that afternoon. After a delicious pizza party with the kids, the representatives got a chance to present the new educational toys, books, clothing, electronics, and other supplies to the excited kids as well as spend some quality time with the children.
Recycled Greeting Card Collection for St. Jude's Ranch for Children
Travcoa, and sister company YMT Vacations, joined people from all over the world who have sent St. Jude’s Ranch their used greeting cards! More than thirty years ago, St. Jude’s Ranch Recycles Card Program was established, asking the children in St. Jude’s care to reuse the fronts of Christmas cards to create new ones for the next season. The program’s success expanded its efforts from Christmas cards to all-occasion, relying on the amazingly creative abilities of St. Jude’s children to recycle cards that would once end up in the trash. The benefits of this great program are two-fold: customers receive "green" holiday cards for use while the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of recycling. As of February 2010, Travcoa and YMT Vacations donated 72 cards, but a year-round collection box has been created to do a similar shipment in the future!
2009 Completed Intiatives:
Heal the Bay’s Coastal Cleanup Day
Saturday, September 19th, 2009
An event that began in 1985, Coastal Cleanup Day has grown to become an international event tidying up rivers, bays, and lakes in addition to coastal beaches worldwide. Annually, approximately 10,000 volunteers in the Los Angeles County spend a few hours clearing coasts and other waterways of trash debris, completing collection “data cards” of items picked up to help identify and stop future polluters. With tens of thousands of pounds of garbage collected each year by such a large volunteer effort, it’s no wonder why this event is considered one of the largest volunteer days on the planet. Travcoa staff members, along with staff from sister company YMT Vacations, proudly participated at the Dockweiler Beach in the El Segundo area.
Bolsa Chica Land Trust
Sunday, September 27th, 2009
Bolsa Chica Mesa is one of the last wetland ecosystems in Southern California, in need of re-vegetation and restoration in order to ensure its preservation for future generations. Since the process of restoring the Bolsa Chica Mesa began in 1995, over 16,000 native plants have been introduced to the habitat. Partnering with the California Department of Fish & Game, the area is already starting to see the benefits of their conservation and preservation efforts in the wildlife of the area, and is excited to see the continued growth and prosperity in the future. Travcoa’s staff, along with sister company YMT Vacations, lent their aid in helping restore and rejuvenate such an important section of Southern California.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
November 11th – November 18th, 2009
Travcoa and our sister company, YMT Vacations, coordinated with the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank to host an office Thanksgiving Food Drive. In the spirit of this giving season, staff members were encouraged to donate non-perishable food and hygiene items for those families in need in the community. A total of 180 pounds of donations – two collection barrels filled to the brim – were picked up by the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank to be distributed. With about 900 different organizations and charities it supplies, the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank makes a huge impact across Los Angeles. This was just one more opportunity for Travcoa to give back, making a special way to kick-off the beginning of the holiday season.
