Journey Itinerary

Day 1Nairobi, Kenya

Upon arrival you are transferred to our luxury boutique hotel—Hemingways Nairobi—overlooking the Ngong Hills, immortalized in Ernest Hemingway’s safari account entitled “Green Hills of Africa”. This evening, we kick off our exclusive, one-time-only 2015 President's Journey at a cocktail party and dinner hosted by Travcoa President Jerre Fuqua and your DC-3 flight crew, headed by legendary Captain Phillipus (Flippie) Vermeulen.

Day 2 & 3 Masai Mara

This morning we fly to Masai Mara, Kenya’s premier wildlife reserve and transfer to our luxury safari camp, one of the region’s most beautiful. We visit a traditional Maasai village to gain insight into this timeless culture; we meet the people, step inside their huts, and may even capture the essence of their colorful red robes and hand-beaded jewelry in vibrant photographs. Next, we embark on our first afternoon game drive, enjoy the panoramic views afforded by our open-air 4x4 vehicle, and experience the thrill of up-close wildlife encounters and the expert insight of our experienced guide.

Our full-day game drive on Day 3 showcases the prime-time September viewing during the annual wildebeest migration, one of the natural world’s great wonders. This evening, toast the setting sun and enjoy a special dinner back at our camp on the banks of Sand River.

  • Sand River Masai Mara, Masai Mara National Park (DELUXE TENT)

Day 4–6 Masai Mara & Serengeti, Tanzania

Greet the African sunrise while hovering over the Masai Mara during a hot-air balloon flight. Animal herds ebb and flow as we trace bending rivers, clear the trees and come back to earth for a triumphant champagne breakfast in the sunlit bush.

A transfer to the airstrip brings us back to our now-familiar DC-3. We fly back to Nairobi for a brief visit to the historic Aero Club of East Africa, and then continue our flight south into Tanzania and Serengeti National Park. For the next two days we explore the Serengeti on morning and afternoon game drives accompanied by experienced guides.

Back at camp, indulge in a massage, relax by the infinity pool, or soak in your tent’s private plunge pool. In the evenings, enjoy Sundowners, dinners, fireside talks and nightly star-gazing lectures.

  • Lemala Kuria Hills, Serengeti National Park (DELUXE TENT)

Day 7–9 South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

This morning we fly south to the northern edge of Zambia and South Luangwa National Park, which is known for its prolific game including elephants, giraffes, Cape buffalos, antelopes and crocodiles.

We arrive at our lodge late afternoon, its thatched roof nestled beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany trees. For the next two days, enjoy morning and afternoon game drives guaranteed to keep your camera clicking. During one evening we attend a special performance of “Theater in the Bush,” performed by a small group of village actors who offer a vibrant blend of traditional song and dance, puppetry and storytelling at our lodge.

Day 10-11 Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Today’s DC-3 flight brings us to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival mid-afternoon, we are escorted to our luxury lodge overlooking Zambezi National Park. Relax on the verandah to enjoy views of the breathtaking African sunset and the comings and goings of wildlife at the lodge’s own water hole.

Take advantage of Travcoa’s unique Dine-Around Program to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in Victoria Falls or at our luxurious lodgings.

On the morning of Day 11, the monumental scale and ethereal beauty of Victoria Falls—one of the original Seven Natural Wonders of the World—draws us body and soul to multiple viewpoints. You soon realize why this area was described by the local Kololo tribe as Mosi-oa-Tunya or “the Smoke that Thunders.” When the Zambezi River is at full strength, it plunges over a mile-wide, 320-foot-high cliff at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. There are five separate falls: Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls and Eastern Cataract—each offering its own distinctive display.

In the late afternoon we embark on a sunset cruise down the Zambezi River to see hippopotamuses, crocodiles and bird life, both in the water and along the banks of this “River of Life”.

After our cruise we return to the lodge for dinner, or you may choose stay in town to take advantage of Travcoa’s Dine-Around Program.

  • Victoria Falls Safari Club, Victoria Falls (DELUXE CLUB ROOM)

Day 12–13 Victoria Falls & Okavango Delta, Botswana

This morning we transfer to the Victoria Falls airport to continue our DC-3 journey west to Botswana and the iconic Okavango Delta. The only inland delta of its kind, it is a unique oasis of life in the Kalahari Desert.

Our home for the next two nights is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful camps and our thrilling safaris are conducted by a choice of mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), motorboat, and walking trails. In the late afternoon, we board the camp’s river cruiser to watch for elephants, and hippos as the sun goes down in brilliant flames of orange, red and gold. A helicopter excursion adds a birds’-eye perspective.

  • Belmond Eagle Island Lodge, Okavango Delta (LUXURY TENT)

Day 14 & 15 Phinda Reserve, South Africa

This afternoon, our flight brings us to the renowned Phinda Private Game Reserve. En route to the lodge we are treated to a late afternoon game drive. Later we enjoy Sundowner refreshments and then a nocturnal bush safari.

On Day 15 we enjoy morning and afternoon game drives accompanied by our expert ranger and Zulu tracker. In the evening we are treated to a final Sundowner and dinner at the camp, drawing the safari portion of our amazing journey to a close.

We arrive at Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world, where we visit the Safari Ostrich Show Farm and enjoy lunch at the Ostrich Palace. Afterwards, we board our DC-3 aircraft to embark on the final leg of our air journey which brings us to Cape Town. Day 18–20Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula & Cape Winelands

This morning we will make a breathtaking ascent of Table Mountain via aerial cableway and then venture outside the city to explore Cape Point and the Cape Peninsula. Highlights include Llandudno, the fishing village of Hout Bay and Chapman’s Peak Pass, one of the world’s most spectacular marine drives; it skirts a rocky coastline with sheer drops to the sea below while mountains rise high above. At the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve we marvel at the most powerful lighthouse in the world and the Monument to the Cross of Vasco da Gama. The Flying Dutchman funicular takes us to the top of Cape Point for panoramic views followed by a visit to the African penguin colony at Boulders Beach. This evening we join a South African family for an enlightening dinner in their home, where they share their insight into daily life in South Africa.

On Day 19 we tour Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens before continuing to the wine country towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. We enjoy private wine tastings and lunch at a winery. This evening, back in Cape Town, we enjoy a dinner party and bid farewell to the fascinating continent of Africa.
