On the morning of Day 11, the monumental scale and ethereal beauty of Victoria Falls—one of the original Seven Natural Wonders of the World—draws us body and soul to multiple viewpoints. You soon realize why this area was described by the local Kololo tribe as Mosi-oa-Tunya or “the Smoke that Thunders.” When the Zambezi River is at full strength, it plunges over a mile-wide, 320-foot-high cliff at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. There are five separate falls: Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls and Eastern Cataract—each offering its own distinctive display.
In the late afternoon we embark on a sunset cruise down the Zambezi River to see hippopotamuses, crocodiles and bird life, both in the water and along the banks of this “River of Life”.
