Romantic Germany & Austria with Oberammergau

DAYS 1 – 3

Munich, Germany

Arrive in Munich on Day 2. You’ll see a performance of the great Glockenspiel at the New Town Hall, the impressive 16th-century Cathedral (Frauenkirche) and the former Royal Palace of Bavarian Monarchs. Tour the lively Schwabing district, where you will find many theatres, museums, and the lovely Englischer Garten. Visit the Baroque Nymphenberg Palace, the famous summer residence of Bavarian rulers.

DAYS 4 & 5

Salzburg, Austria

Drive to Lake Chiemsee and visit the Island of Herrenchiemsee. You will see the fantastic castle built by Ludwig II, modeled after Versailles. Continue to the beautiful city of Salzburg, home to the skillfully renovated Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Attend a performance at the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. During your time in Salzburg you will visit Mirabell Gardens, the home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, adjoining the lavish Mirabell Palace and Hellbrunn Castle. A treat on the evening of Day 5 is a special Mozart dinner at the famous Restaurant Stiftskeller. Dine on specialties from Mozart’s time as you listen to his piano masterpieces.

DAYS 6 & 7

Innsbruck

In Innsbruck, capital of Tyrol, your walking tour of the city will take you along Maria-Theresienstrasse to see the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof), the Hofburg Palace and the Silberne Kapelle (Silver Chapel) built by Archduke Ferdinand. Drive deep into the forest to mad King Ludwig’s Linderhof Castle, in the middle of the Ammergau Alps. Visit the small castle surrounded by magnificent terraced gardens, pools, cascades and a large ornamental lake. Continue to Hohenschwangau for lunch and then make your way up to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, known to many as the inspiration for the castle in Disneyland.

DAY 8

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

Drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany’s largest alpine resort comprised of two 1,100-year-old towns that were merged for the 1936 Olympics. Both a world-class ski and summer resort it boasts Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. Enjoy the scenic cable car ride to the top, have lunch and take in the panoramic view of the surrounding four countries.

DAY 9

Oberammergau

The Oberammergau Passion Play dates back to 1633, and is performed once a decade to commemorate God sparing the town from the Black Plague. Attend the performance after lunch.

Munich

Those with limited time may leave this journey and depart from Munich on Day 10.

DAY 10

Lake Constance

Your luxury accommodations on a private island offer a unique experience in an ancient former Dominican Monastery. Take a guided walk through the interesting lanes and alleys of the old town which is almost unchanged since medieval days.

DAYS 11 & 12

Baden-Baden & Black Forest, Germany; Strasbourg, France

Drive to Baden-Baden where you will spend the next two nights in the luxurious Brenners Park Hotel, where kings and celebrities have laid their heads. On your afternoon tour of the city you will visit the “Trinkhalle,” the Bath quarter and the 2,000-year old Roman Bath ruins. Venture into the Black Forest where master craftsmen carve the Black Forest cuckoo clocks. Continue to Strasbourg in France’s Alsace region, home of reisling and traminer wines and some of France’s most exquisite cuisines.

DAYS 13 – 15

Heidelberg & Wiesbaden

Drive to Heidelberg on the banks of the River Neckar. Enjoy a walk and ride the cable car up to the castle. Explore elegant, cosmopolitan Wiesbaden, the “Gateway to the Rhine Valley,” famed for its hot springs. See the historical old quarter with the palace, the old and new town hall, and neo-Gothic Market Church. Last afternoon, enjoy wine tasting in the Eberbach Monastery. Conclude your journey with a gala farewell dinner. Depart from Frankfurt on Day 15.
