DAY 2

Travel today to Turrialba, known as “the Swit- zerland of Costa Rica.” Here, in the center of the country, volcanic mountains meet in a lush green valley carved out by the Pancuare and Reventazón rivers. Choose from Class I & II rapids for a leisurely trip down the river or Class III & IV for a more challenging ride. (B, L)

DAYS 3 & 4

Continue to Tortuguero today. Explore the Caño Palma Wildlife Reserve via a private, guided boat tour. Learn about the 150 species of trees and the wide variety of animals that thrive in this lush environment. Later, take a guided boat tour of Tortuguero National Park. Keep an eye out for ghost and howler mon- keys, sloths, and the elusive jaguar. (2B, L, 2D)

DAYS 5 – 7

Fly to San José to meet your private car and driver then drive to Avenal on day 5. After you have settled into your hotel, visit Tabacón Hot Springs, home to dozens of lush and secluded pools in which to relax and soak in the warm mineral waters. On Day 6 take a guided hike through Arenal Volcano National Park and the Arenal Hanging Bridges. Enjoy a private luncheon at a local farm, then take a canopy tour on the “sky tram” to get a very different perspective of the rainforest and Arenal. You have the option of riding a high-speed zipline back down. On Day 7 enjoy a full-day guided excursion to Caño Negro, including a boat tour through the wetlands of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge to see animals such as sloths, monkeys and caimans. (3B, 3L, D)

DAYS 8 – 11

Enjoy three days to relax and soak up the sun. On Day 9 take a “float trip” down Rio Corobicí. The scenery along the river is legendary. While enjoying the leisurely raft ride, look for some of the 300-plus species of birds that live in nearby Palo Verde National Park. On Day 11 you will be transferred to the airport in Liberia for your return flight. (4B)
