Day 1

Welcome to Argentina. Start the day in the historic Plaza de Mayo – the political heart of Buenos Aires. The plaza’s prominent buildings, the May Obelisk, Metropolitan Cathedral, Cabildo and Casa Rosada, are a visual timeline of the city’s history. 

Continue onto the most well-known barrios (neighborhoods) of Buenos Aires: San Telmo, La Boca, Puerto Madero, Palermo and Recoleta. 

Spanish Colonial design and French Classicism combine on the cobbled streets of San Telmo where the rhythms of tango houses, restaurants and bars come alive at night. On Sundays the Plaza Dorrego’s weekly flea market bustles with activity. It’s an excellent place to buy souvenirs and people watch. It’s not uncommon to see couples tango dancing in the market streets. 

Next up is the colorful port neighborhood of La Boca, a thriving Italian enclave where Genoese sailors came to Argentinean shores in the late 19th century. This working-class neighborhood is best know for the famous pedestrian street of El Caminito, named for a popular tango song, where local artists showcase their talents. 

Modern sophistication blends seamlessly with centuries of maritime history in the chic barrio of Puerto Madero where glass-sheathed skyscrapers cast their shadows over historic warehouses. 

The bohemian boutiques of the Palermo district merge into the elegant residences of Recoleta and the famous La Recoleta Cemetery. The Cementario Recoleta, which boasts the most expensive real estate in the city, houses some of the most important personalities of Argentinean social, cultural and political life. The most famous resident interred here is Eva Duarte, who became famous as Eva Peron (Evita), a vibrant figure in the turbulent politics of Argentina in the 1940’s and 50’s.

Today you will be privately transferred to the Buenos Aires airport in time to board your flight to Trelew. Upon arrival you will be met and privately transferred to the Welsh community of Puerto Madryn where the stunning coastline and marine life of the Atlantic Patagonia await.

Day 4

Your adventure to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Valdés Peninsula begins with a drive to the quaint village of Puerto Piramide where you will board a boat and set sail around the Peninsula. Throughout the year, the Valdés Peninsula plays host to a rich array of wildlife – many of which are endangered species. Colonies of cormorants build their nests into the nearby cliffs. Colonies of Elephant Seals bask in the sun near the Punta Delgada lighthouse where you will stop for lunch. Orcas are often seen alternately frolicking and hunting in these waters. The most well-known visitor to the Valdés Peninsula are the magnificent Southern Right Whales that annually migrate here from June through December to mate and calve their young. The Peninsula is best described as an island united to the mainland by a narrow strip of land called the Carlos Ameghina Isthmus. You’ll stop at the Isthmus’ observation deck where you can take in the spectacular vistas of the Golfo Nuevo. Arrive back at the hotel later this afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Bid farewell to Puerto Madryn as you continue your journey through the highlights of Argentina. After breakfast this morning you will be privately transferred to the Trelew airport in time to board your flight to El Calafate. A scenic and small village with inviting walking trails and a variety of wildlife, El Calafate perches on the banks of Lago Argentino adjacent to the southern end of the Andes. Upon arrival you will be met and privately transferred to the Eolo Patagonia’s Spirit Lodge. A Relais and Chateaux property, the Eolo is the essence of Patagonian charm nestled in the tranquil landscape carpeted in tall tufts of golden coiron grass. Day 6

After breakfast this morning enjoy a full day of exploration at the Perito Moreno Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. En route to the park the mysterious beauty of the Patagonian Andes lakes, forests and mountains unfold before you and stretch for 300 miles to the world’s southernmost seas. Named after famed Argentine scientist Francisco "Perito" Moreno, the Perito Moreno Glacier forms part of the vast Patagonian Continental Ice Field. At three miles wide, and towering 263 feet above Lago Argentino, it is one of the few glaciers in the world still advancing. The water pressure behind the glacier creates an explosive spectacle called calving as icicles shear off its frozen walls offering viewers a must-see experience. The park has several walking trails that offer unique views of this spectacular frozen river carving and calving its way through the landscape. Return to El Calafate where the rest of the afternoon/evening is at your leisure. (B)

Today you will be privately transferred to the Trelew airport in time for your flight to Bariloche. Located in the Andean foothills, Bariloche rivals the Swiss Alps for sheer beauty. Depart early this morning and take the “Road of the Seven Lakes” towards Villa La Angostura, an alluring village surrounded by thick woods and snow-capped mountain peaks. Along the way travel through rugged Patagonian landscapes where you may catch sight of Andean condors soaring overhead or of roaming herds of grazing guanaco. In Villa La Angostura indulge in some retail-therapy in the village before continuing along the Seven Lakes Road past Lake Correntoso, world-famous for its fly-fishing, and Espejo (Mirror) Lake and arrive at San Martin de Los Andes. San Martin de Los Andes is a captivating mountain town perched on the tip of Lago Lá́car. The town boasts great restaurants and delightful boutiques. You’ll have time for lunch on your own before continuing on through the Cordoba Pass on the journey back to Bariloche. (B)

This morning you will be privately transferred to the airport in time for your flight to Mendoza. Upon arrival at the El Plumerillo Airport you will be privately transferred to the Park Hyatt Mendoza where you will check in for your two-night stay. Day 10

The province of Mendoza is known as the land of sun and good wine. The region boasts a perfect microclimate that produces the most exquisite and finest of Argentinean wines. Immerse yourself in the local viticulture in the regions of Maipu or Lujan. Visit a local winery and learn about their winemaking methods and procedures, from cultivation to bottling, and enjoy lunch while sampling the fruits of their labor. After lunch return to Mendoza where the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. Explore the city on your own or relax at the Park Hyatt. (B, L)

Today bid farewell to Mendoza as you are privately transferred to the El Plumerillo Airport in time for your flight to Salta. Salta’s name is derived from the Aymara word sagta meaning “very beautiful.” Once you see the city tucked in its lush, fertile valley you will understand the name. Founded in 1582 this provincial capital is a sunny city with gracious people and exceptionally preserved colonial architecture. Upon arrival you are privately transferred to the House of Jasmines to check in for your two-night stay. The seven-suite House of Jasmines is a luxury boutique hotel owned by actor Robert Duvall. This 120-year-old, 300 acre ranch offers you respite with grounds overrun with the rich scents of roses, orchids and jasmine. Tour the distinctive highlights of Salta this afternoon. The urban skyline is distinguished by the colonial architecture of its original buildings and houses of worship. The streets of old town have traditional Andalusian abodes with their tiled roofs, thick white-washed walls and wrought-iron balconies highlighted by scarlet and fuschia geraniums. Ascend San Bernardo Hill where the neo-classical cathedral, Archbishop’s Palace, 18th century Cabildo, and San Bernardo Convent all can be seen from its striking panoramic view. The last stop of the day is the lively Arts and Crafts Market. Local textiles, ponchos, pottery and traditional musical instruments abound here. (Look for handicrafts with a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing their quality and origin.) Relax this evening in beautiful Salta at your hotel or meander the city on your own. (B)

Day 12

This morning travel through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Quebrada de Humahuaca, a 93-mile strip of land with colorful plateaus and timeless villages. Your first stop is Purmamarca, a small and inviting Indian village founded in 1594 and framed by the Cerro de los Siete Colores, the Mountain of Seven Colors, one of Mendoza’s best-kept secrets. Its mineral-rich geology creates amazing colors that softly transition from brown to violet and from red to green. In Purmamarca, small white-washed houses adorn the main square where local artisans offer wood carvings, hand-woven carpets and a wide assortment of medicinal and aromatic herbs for every possible ailment. Sojourn in Tilcara to see the Indian ruins at the Pucara de Tilcara National Monument, where evidence of human civilization can be traced back more than 10,000 years. See the partially reconstructed Indian fortification, showing the living quarters, pens for llamas, trails, terraces and sacred burial sites. Wander through the Botanical Garden and the Archeological museum which displays more than 5,000 artifacts from various Indian cultures. One of the most valuable items on display is a mummified body discovered in the Atacama Desert – fully clothed and in an excellent state of preservation. On the way back to Salta the Paleta del Pintor, Painter’s Palette, provides a visual feast of rock formations arching across the mountainsides at Maimará in dark blood tints of iron and magnesium, the weathered green of copper and sulfur yellows. You will make a stop en route to enjoy the palpable peace of this immense landscape. (B)

Day 13

Depart Salta today for the beauty and history of the Calchaqui Valley and its stunning landscapes. The day begins with a drive southward up the Escoipe River Gorge to enjoy the imposing scenery of Cuesta del Obispo (Bishop’s Slope). The highest point on the slope is Piedra de Molino, the gateway between the Calchaqui and Lema Valleys. Continue along the Recta del Tin Tin with its barren landscape of sleek, towering candelabra cacti before crossing into the National Park Los Cardones. Pass by Payogasta before reaching Cachi. This picturesque village is surrounded by the Andean Precordillera Mountains at the confluence of the Rio Calchaqui and Rio Cachi. Cachi’s colorful pre-Columbian atmosphere, with its adobe houses adorned with wrought-iron grids and topped with cactus and mud covered roofs, is an oasis of sunshine and air so pure the locals are known to live to a ripe old age. Visit the parish church and the Archaeological Museum before returning to Cafayate to check into the Patios de Cafayate Hotel. Patios de Cafayate, part of the Starwood Luxury Collection, is a bodega master's historic manor at its core. Continue through the Quebrada de las Conchas on your way back to the Salta airport in time for your flight to Iguazú Falls. Upon arrival you will be privately transferred to the Sheraton International Iguazú Resort for two nights in a room with a fantastic view. Relax on your balcony in the heart of Iguazú National Park as you listen the majestic thundering of the falls in the distance. The rest of the day is at your leisure. (B)

Today explore the Argentinean side of Iguazú Falls, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Board the gas-propelled train to view Garganta del Diabo (the Devil’s Throat) the highlight of Iguazú Falls. Stroll on a protected catwalk, built over the Upper Iguazú River, crossing several small islands along the way until you reach the lookout where the Devil’s Throat unleashes its resplendent power – an astonishing sight you’ll remember forever. Continue to the Upper & Lower Circuits of the Argentine side for more spectacular views. Be prepared for a fair amount of stair climbing on the trails, but the view is worth the effort. Lush tropical vegetation flourishes in this rainforest micro-climate and parrots chatter overhead as you walk above and to the edges of the waterfalls. After returning to the hotel the rest of the day is at your leisure. (B)

This morning you’ll have the opportunity to explore the Brazilian side of the falls on a leisurely walking tour. Cross the Tancredo Neves Bridge and Juan D Peron Bridge that connect Argentina with Brazil. Upon arrival at the Park’s guest center board a bus that will transport you into the park. Stroll along this easy trek with picture stops to see several gorgeous vistas of some the most well-known falls such as the Bossetti, San Martin and Tres Mosqueteros. The tour ends at the upper part of Iguazú Falls accessed via panoramic elevator. At the end of the tour you will be taken back to the hotel and privately transferred to the Iguazú Airport in time for your flight to Buenos Aires.
