Spanning over 2,500 years, Rome’s history covers the brutal early days of the Roman Empire through the capricious birth of Christianity, later the Italian Renaissance and finally what is now the modern metropolis.
The Forum, the central hub of ancient Rome, houses the oldest and most esteemed ruins of the ancient city. The Temple of Vesta and the surrounding House of the Vestal Virgins are located here, as well as the white marble Arch of Septimius Severus and the Temple of Saturn, among many others.
The massive grandeur of the Coliseum is a not‐to‐be‐missed experience. 50,000 seated spectators at a time witnessed public spectacles beginning in 80 AD until the Middle Ages, when the Popes transformed it into a marble, lead and iron quarry to build Piazza Venezia and St. Peter’s Basilica, another must‐see. Newly opened to the public for the first time in 2010, the subterranean passageways used by the wild animals and gladiators are now accessible.
