DAY 1Devonport to Cradle Mountain This morning depart Devonport for a scenic drive to Cradle Mountain National Park, stopping to explore the artist colony of Sheffield, and its murals depicting Tasmanian life. This afternoon at Cradle Mountain, a unique natural World Heritage site, take a walk in the forest looking for wallabies and wombats. (L,D) Cradle Mountain Lodge DAY 2Dove Lake Walk This morning enjoy a 3‐hour walk through the Tasmanian rainforest. Observe the birdlife including the Forest Ravens, Currawongs and Wedge‐tailed Eagles. After a picnic lunch overlooking the Wombat Fields, visit Waldheim Chalet, home of noted conversationalist Gustav Weindorfer. This afternoon, visit Devils Cradle Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary for some up‐close animal encounters. (B,L) Cradle Mountain Lodge DAY 3Cradle Mountain to Strahan Depart Cradle Mt. this morning, stopping in the old mining town of Roseberry for an easy 3‐hour walk to Montezuma Falls. Next, it’s on to Zeehan, for lunch and a visit to the Mining Museum, then continue on to Strahan. This evening take an enlightening twilight cruise to Bonnet Island, to view the Little Penguins come ashore, and hear the tales of the lighthouse keepers. (B,L) Strahan Village DAY 4Gordon River & Strahan Today cruise on the Gordon River through Hell’s Gates, and across Macquarie Harbour to the tranquil reaches of the river’s ancient pristine wilderness. On board, enjoy a gourmet Tasmanian lunch including local wines as you relax in the Captain’s Upper Deck seating. Stop at Heritage Landing for a rainforest walk, and to see the 2,000‐year‐old Huon Pine tree. Disembark at Sarah Island for a tour of this notorious convict settlement. Return to the charming village of Strahan by mid‐ afternoon and enjoy some free time or perhaps an optional kayaking excursion. (B,L) Strahan Village DAY 5Strahan to Lake St. Clair & Hobart This morning drive east towards Hobart; en route stopping to see the stunning Nelson Waterfalls, Franklin River, and Lake St. Clair, Australia’s deepest lake. Visit ‘The Wall’, a unique in‐progress art project, creating a 325‐foot long wall of wooden relief sculpture depicting Tasmania’s history. Drive along the steep river gorges, and past the old village of Tarraleah, before descending into the farmlands and pastures of the Derwent Valley. End today with wine tasting at Moorilla Estate. Arrive in Hobart by late afternoon. (B,L) Henry Jones Hotel DAY 6Port Arthur & Bonorong Wildlife Park This morning drive to the Tasman Peninsula, and tour the remains of the old convict settlement at Port Arthur Historic Site. After lunch, explore the Tasman Peninsula with its interesting geology ‐ the Tessellated Pavement, Devils Kitchen and Tasman’s Arch. Next, continue to Richmond, a charming historic village of colonial sandstone architecture; stroll across the oldest bridge in Australia and enjoy afternoon tea. This evening enjoy a private tour of Bonorong Wildlife Park, a Tasmanian park committed to the conservation and care of threatened species. Meet Tasmania’s animals, including the iconic Tasmanian Devil, wombats, wallabies and bandicoots, and at dusk, participate in their evening feeding. Return to Hobart tonight. (B,L) Henry Jones Hotel DAY 7Hobart to Freycinet National Park This morning tour Hobart ‐ Walk through Battery Point, a colonial maritime village of narrow, winding streets with small wooden cottages, period large houses, pubs and churches. Drive to the summit of Mt. Wellington for stunning views of Hobart and southern Tasmania. Depart Hobart heading east, stopping on the way to taste some of the local wines. Arrive at the Freycinet Lodge and enjoy the view of sunset across the Great Oyster Bay. (B,L) Freycinet Lodge DAY 8Freycinet National Park Today explore the unsurpassed beauty of the Freycinet National Park – starting with a cruise across Great Oyster Bay and around the Tasmanian Peninsula to Wineglass Bay. Watch for dolphins and sea eagles as you sip a glass of local sparkling wine and taste freshly chucked oysters. In the afternoon, enjoy a scenic tour of the park and the beautiful Coles Bay coastline. Visit Cape Tourville Lighthouse and stroll the boardwalk high above the ocean. (B,L,D) Freycinet Lodge DAY 9The Midlands & Tamar Valley to Launceston Today travel through the agricultural Midlands region; stopping in the charming historic village of Ross, set along the banks of the Macquarie River. Continue north through the vineyards of the Tamar Valley and enjoy a gourmet lunch and wine tasting. Arrive in Launceston, a city whose history is seen in its magnificent Victorian and Georgian architecture. Your day ends with a stroll through scenic Cataract Gorge.
