You are met on arrival in Amman and driven to Jerash, one of the best-preserved Greco-Roman provincial cities in the Middle East. Tour through the colonnaded streets, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates.

DAY 2

This morning travel along the 5,000- year-old Kings’ Highway to Madaba, known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, including the famous 6th-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. After lunch, continue to Mt. Nebo, thought to be the burial place of Moses, and from where he viewed the Promised Land. See across the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem, and over the Great Rift Valley and the Dead Sea. Visit Kerak, a crusader castle with remains dating back to the Iron Age. (B, L)

DAY 3

Arrive in the ancient rose-red city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A compelling sight, Petra was carved from sandstone cliffs by the ancient Nabateans in the 3rd century B.C., then forgotten for 1,000 years, only to be rediscovered in 1812. Petra captivates the imagination of many an adventurer, explorer, historian and archeologist. Begin your excursion to Petra by horseback, and continue on foot to the Treasury, the Corinthian Tombs, and for the adventurous, a climb to the Monastery. (B, L)

DAY 4

Today drive to the Red Sea, stopping en route to visit Wadi Rum, known as “The Valley of the Moon,” to take a 4-wheel- drive Jeep tour through the maze of monolithic rockscapes. Continue to Aqaba and enjoy a glass-bottom boat ride on the Red Sea. (B)

DAYS 5 & 6

Visit Citadel Hill and the Jordan Archaeological Museum. Citadel Hill offers a view across the Old City and is the site of the ruins of the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, a Byzantine church, and the remains of Roman walls. On Day 6 you are taken to the airport for your flight home or on to your next destination. (2B)
