Upon arrival, you are met and taken to your safari camp, arriving in time for lunch. Settle in before your first game drive later this afternoon. (B, L, D) Tawi Lodge, Amboseli National Park Day 3Amboseli National Park During your morning game drive, savor the tranquility of this stunning scenery. See the herds of elephant making their way across the grassy plains, with Kilimanjaro in the background. Spot other animals including buffalo, lion, gazelle, Massai giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and baboons. The National Park embodies five main wildlife habitats – open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland. Within the basin is a temporary lake, Lake Amboseli, which fills during years of heavy rainfall. Amboseli is famous for its big game; over 80 different mammals are found here. And look for the over 400 species of birds, especially the cinnamon and golden breasted bunting or the blue‐headed coucal. Enjoy time to relax and take in the magnificent scenery before heading out again on your late afternoon game drive. (B, L, D) Tawi Lodge, Amboseli National Park Day 4Amboseli to Maasai Mara After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight (via Nairobi), to the Maasai Mara. You are met upon arrival, and your game viewing begins. Your expert guide assists you in spotting the native wildlife, as well as giving you an introduction on the region as you make your way to the Olonana Safari Camp. Situated on the banks of the Mara River, in the heart of Kenya's Big Game country, your camp offers remarkable opportunities for safari adventurers. Enjoy lunch and an afternoon rest at the camp before adventuring on another game drive. Set in the heart of Africa’s Great Plains, the Maasai Mara boasts 650 sq. miles of unspoiled wilderness – with views across rolling golden grasslands studded with acacia trees, rivers and forests, offering excellent game and bird viewing. Return to the camp as the sun sets. Full board and house beverages are included throughout your stay. (B, L, D) Olonana Tented Camp, Maasai Mara Day 5 & 6Maasai Mara National Reserve Enjoy two days of 4WD or walking safaris through these plains rich with flora and fauna, including all of the Big Five. Spot the big cats, including lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena, as well herds of wildebeest, gazelle, buffalo, elephant and more than 300 bird species. Take time for other included activities, such as a cultural visit to the Maasai village (or engang) to learn about the local culture and traditional ways, nature walks, sundowners, or a visit to a local school. You are entirely at your own pace at Olonana – nothing is pre-scheduled. Meals, game drives and all other activities operate according to the guests' wishes and opportunities arising from the changing patterns of animal activity. In the evening, you may enjoy a drink on the veranda, while watching the hippo frolicking just before heading out for their nightly grazing. One night enjoy an elegant dinner out in the bush. (B, L, D) Olonana Tented Camp, Maasai Mara Day 7Maasai Mara to Lamu & Manda Island Enjoy time this morning for some morning game viewing before you are transferred to the Maasai Mara airport for your flights (via Nairobi) to Lamu Island. It is the oldest existing town in Kenya, dating back to the 12th century, and still retains its charm and character. Lamu is known for its Swahili architecture, narrow streets, and busy markets filled with men wearing embroidered hats, women dressed in full-length black bui-buis, and thousands of donkeys. (B, L, D) The Majlis, Manda Island Day 10Lamu to Nairobi This afternoon, transfer to the mainland and Lamu airport, for your schedule flight to Nairobi. Upon arrival, you are met and taken directly to your hotel. (B) Fairmont the Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi Day 11Nairobi Sightseeing & Depart This morning, travel outside Nairobi for a heart-warming visit to David Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage. This sanctuary is run by his widow, Dame Daphne Sheldrick, and is set in the grounds of her house. Meet the orphaned animals and the people who handle and care for them – a truly loving staff. Next, proceed to Alan Donovan’s African Heritage House for lunch. Designed by American Alan Donovan, this gallery and heritage house is a combination of mud architecture from across Africa. Overlooking Nairobi National Park, the house seems to rise from the Kenyan plain like an outcropping of earth. Inside the house, on every wall, floor and ceiling, in textiles, wood, masonry, pottery, weaponry, and art, are testimonial examples of modern African crafts. After a late lunch, you are taken to Nairobi Wilson airport for your departing flight home or on to your next destination. (B, L) |
