Can an elephant fit on a webpage?

Well, not completely. But our friend Shukuru is trying.

It’s easy to be fond of elephants, they’re beautiful, intelligent and highly social animals. But life can also be tough for wild herds these days due to habitat loss, human encroachment, poaching and a host of other threats. That’s why Travcoa supports The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a registered, charitable organization that has been dedicated to the rescue and protection of elephants in East Africa for over 33 Years.

Founded in 1977 in honor of the respected game warden and conservationist, the late David Sheldrick, the mission continues under guidance of a governing board and Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick. The Trust maintains a headquarters outside Nairobi, Kenya that serves as a sanctuary for threatened and orphaned young elephants and rhinos, some only days old on arrival, with the hope to release each individual back into the wild at maturity. Each year, the group expands its “herd” with new arrivals that require constant care and hand-feeding of a specialized substitute milk formula until two years of age. Travcoa recently fostered a spirited young female elephant named Shukuru, pictured on this page, who’s tragic but hopeful story can be found here.

Travcoa guests on the 2011 Grand Safari with Kenya & Tanzania itinerary will have a private visit to the Elephant and Rhino Nursery at the Trust’s compound in order to interact with the infant elephants and their family of keepers. Each booking on this journey will also enjoy a one-year elephant sponsorship of their own, compliments of Travcoa, complete with a monthly progress report and current photographs from the Trust.
